What is acrylic nail
powder? It is made of polymers, and it’s used in nail salons to help create nail extensions. Most
of the time, it’s used with a liquid monomer, and the two react and harden, forming a hard
shell.
The main ingredient
in acrylic nail powder is polyethylmethylmethacrylate (wow, what a
word!).This creates
a flexible and strong resin that mimics many of the properties of real fingernails. You couldn’t
make a good nail extension without it!
When the acrylic
nail powder and the liquid are mixed together, the chemical reaction causes polymer chains to
form. These chains harden really fast, so quick shaping and manipulation are necessary to
properly form a nail extension.
Color can be added to give the nail
extension a pink or peach hue. Sometimes, benzoyl peroxide is added to give the powder a white color.
Stabilizers are often added to keep the extensions from becoming discolored after sun or UV lamp
exposure.
The basic nail acrylic powder can
be altered to make fiberglass or gel nail extensions as well. Pre-joining the monomers creates a gel nail that’s
rigid when the gel hardens. Gel nails are falling out of popularity because of this rigid nature - they look and
feel so much like glass, that they shatter on impact with a hard surface.
Fiberglass nail extensions are made
by spreading the nail powder and liquid mixture over a fiberglass tissue. Your nail technician will wrap your
nail with the tissue, and then they will apply the nail acrylic powder/monomer liquid mixture with a brush.
Usually, they will start at the bottom of the nail, near the cuticle, and work their way toward the end of the
nail.
If you don’t like to go to the
salon, there are kits available in drug and other stores. They contain both acrylic nail powder and monomer
liquid, allowing you to maintain or start your nail extensions at home. However, to get the best results, have
someone who knows what they are doing apply the nail powder.
It’s hard to properly shape your
own nail extensions, and even harder to smooth and buff
them out. Really, the best way to get good nail extensions is to visit a nail technician.
A few words of caution: acrylic
nail powder can produce toxic and harmful vapor. When the powder is mixed with the monomer liquid, the chemical
reaction produces a foul odor, too.

Women who are expecting should not
get their nails done until after the baby comes, and you should also avoid breathing in the fumes. Also, when
you are getting the nail extensions filed and shaped, try to avoid breathing in the dust that comes
up.
Nail extensions are a beauty ritual
for many women, and when correctly applied, they can be very durable and good looking.
